Wound care

Our Wound Care & Hyperbaric Center, managed by Healogics®, provides specialized treatment for chronic or nonhealing wounds. Any wound that does not respond to normal medical care within 30 days is considered a problem or chronic wound. That's where our expertise can help.

With state-of-the-art treatments available, including debridement, hyperbaric oxygen therapy, dressing selection, special shoes and patient education, people with nonhealing and chronic wounds have a place to turn. Our center uses an interdisciplinary model of care, including infectious disease management, physical therapy, occupational therapy, laboratory evaluation, nutritional management, pain management, diabetic education and radiology testing to address total patient health. In addition, the use of hyperbaric oxygen therapy has been proven effective in reducing swelling, fighting infection and building new blood vessels to produce healthy tissue.

Our Wound Care Center holds the area's largest individual hyperbaric oxygen chambers, and the attending multidisciplinary team includes physicians with advanced training in wound management, nurses, technicians, and experienced staff to assist with appointments and health insurance processing. The center is designed to complement your physicians' services and provide personalized wound treatment programs for each patient who comes through our doors.

Partnership for successful healing

Nonhealing wounds occur most frequently in the elderly and in people with diabetes. Almost 24 million Americans have diabetes, and 6.5 million of them are estimated to live with chronic wounds. The Villages® Regional Hospital has partnered with Healogics®, the world's largest wound care management company, to deliver excellent evidence-based care to patients with chronic wounds in Lake, Sumter and Marion counties. Healogics® Centers traditionally achieve excellent clinical outcomes, including high limb salvage rates, a 92 percent healing rate within 31 days to heal, and extremely high patient satisfaction.

Award-winning care

In 2017, The Wound Care & Hyperbaric Center at The Villages® Regional Hospital received the prestigious Robert A. Warriner III Center of Excellence award for achieving outstanding clinical outcomes. This is the fourth consecutive year the Center has been recognized as a Center of Excellence.

Hyperbaric oxygen therapy

Hyperbaric oxygen therapy is a safe and evidence-based treatment proven to speed the healing process in certain types of wounds. The clear chambers are equipped with televisions and comfortable bedding, so patients are free to watch a movie or take a nap during treatment. The pressurized chamber allows the patient to breathe 100 percent oxygen, which increases the concentration of oxygen in the bloodstream and helps heal the wound from the inside out. A typical course of treatment involves spending about 90 minutes a day in the chamber 5 days per week over a 4- to 6-week period.

This therapy can help reduce swelling, fight infection and build new blood vessels, ultimately producing healthy tissue. It is also effective in fighting certain types of infections; improving circulation; stimulating growth of new blood vessels; and treating crush injuries, osteomyelitis, compromised skin grafts and flaps, brown recluse spider bites, and diabetic wounds of the lower extremities.

Medicare and most healthcare plans reimburse for hyperbaric oxygen therapy for currently accepted indications. Our courteous and professional staff is available to assist you with all of your personal insurance issues.

Preparing for your wound care treatment

Most patients are referred by their primary care physician, and the program operates by appointment. Upon referral, patients undergo a thorough diagnostic examination to identify the type of wound and its underlying causes, the overall health status of the patient, and the patient's ability to comply with needed therapies. A customized treatment plan is developed, and wound size and depth are documented at the initial visit and again at each subsequent visit.

Some of the diagnostic technologies that may be used include:

  • Laboratory evaluation.
  • Radiology (including MRI).
  • Transcutaneous oxygen testing.
  • Vascular studies and electrocardiogram.
  • Ultrasound.

Specialized wound care and hyperbaric oxygen therapy are administered on an outpatient basis. Patients are free to drive themselves to the center for therapy, and you should plan 2 1/2 to 3 hours for each visit. You will be instructed on how to do your own wound care at home between visits, as well as how to protect your wound from further injury. It is very important to remember that you are the most important part of your healing process–keeping appointments and following directions are crucial to a positive healing outcome.
